The earliest place of worship in Rogersville was a brush arbor located in what is now the Old Liberty Cemetery. At an unknown date a building was constructed on the site where all faiths worshipped. The property was part of the158 acres purchased from the United States Government by Hugh Porter, assignee, on March 6, 1819. Hugh Porter and wife, Sarah, sold part of this land to George Simmons on December 21, 1842. After the property changed owners a few more times, on October 10 1848, two acres were deeded to the Methodist Episcopal Church South, Cumberland Prebyterian Church, Continental Presbyterian Church, Sons of Temperance and the Free Masons with Trustees Thomas Davenport, Anderson P. Neely, Daniel W. Haraway, Jonathan M. Cunningham and Peter F. Patrick. The trustee constructed a meeting house on the lot, either starting or completing in 1855, when a trust agreement was made with the creditors. This building has been described as two stories high. It was used as a community school, meeting place for Sons of Temperanc and Free Masons, as well as a place where all faiths worshipped. At an unknown date, this building burned, and the present one was erected in 1889. This property, with church building, was deeded to the Town of Rogersville on September 20, 1975, and was used as the Senior Citizen Center until a new center was built. The entire year of 1997 was spent restoring the old building to its original place in history. Currently Phase 2 Restoration is being conducted throughout the year os 2012. A new kitchen and bathroom facility is being constructed in the back of the structure for convenience of community events such as weddings, tea's, receptions and meetings.

For you folks in Rogersville....... step outside at 12 midnite and you’ll hear the bell ringing at the Historic Rogersville Presbyterian Church. This has become a tradition in welcoming Christmas to Rogersville. This same bell which was built in 1889 has brought in Christmas to our community for well over 100 years. Tonight is a clear night so folks from many mikes away should be able hear it.
Work has begun on the renovation and painting of the old historic church. Please excuse our mess.... Thank you Mayor Richard Herston and the Rogersville Town Council for your help with this project.
A huge thank you to the Rogersville Town Council for approving funds to paint and rehab the Historic Rogersville Presbyterian Church here in town. Thank you! I personally do not attend many council meetings but tonight I noticed something. Each and every council member was cordial, friendly and genuinely interested in all the people that brought business before the town. They even took time at the end of the meeting to commend town employees on the good job they are doing in our town. The best part was they opened up the meeting with prayer and specifically prayed for the towns people. They even sang happy birthday to one of our council members family. Good stuff right here folks. Proud to live in Rogersville!! Morris Lentz
